Springdale, Utah

Thought riding through four states in a day was a big deal, but that’s nothing compared to standing in and touching four at the same time. Got out of Dodge; well ok Durango and headed to the four corners. Only one road in and out which was easy, and you might be able to tell that the landscape changes quite a bit – from the cool comfortable mountains of Colorado to the dry warm canyons of Arizona and Utah. This is Indian country so the only thing at four corners was a number of stands where they were selling their crafts and oh, yea, frybread – of course I had to try it. There were also a lot of road side stands along the way, but didn’t see any more frybread. Nothing but desert in these parts, but there were some great roads to ride, yep, curves with the same dangers as those in the mountains.

Looped between Utah and Arizona most of the way and ended up here. Springdale Utah. Liked the name and it’s on the west entrance to Zion park, so pitched a tent at the camp ground right across from here…yep, the Spotted Dog café and learned something interesting about Utah. The state law is food must be served and consumed on the premises with alcohol sales. Wendy, and thanks for taking such good care of me, made sure I was gonna order food before having a drink…and I thought polygamy was the only thing Utah had going for it. Well, that leads to something else I learned about that, the Pligs. Apparently it’s not a state law in either Arizona or Utah to be legal so the only towns that have it are those on the Arizona Utah border. If the law from Arizona come looking for them, they move to the Utah side of town and if the Utah law, well you can imagine…had to ask, what happens if they both show up at the same time?

Hit Zion park at the right time, the sun just going down and shining off the red cliffs thru the canyon, a great site to see and some comfortable temps to finally ride thru, the rest of the day was hot and dry, not as bad as New Mexico, but hey I was just touching it, New Mexico that is at the four corners. The park costs $20 to go thru and that was the only way to get from the direction I was coming to here, but hey, it’s not so bad when it’s free…just gotta know how to sweet talk the lady ranger into letting you go thru to the fun side of the park – ok, not really, but remember those bikers I met last night, well they gave me their pass for the park which is good for 5 days, thanks guys.

Had more dirt to ride through, but that was only the 3 miles that dropped 1100 feet…again, sharp curves with nothing but cliff over the side, but what a view and ride down to the canyon floor. The sites are something else to see, but I still think I prefer the mountains of Colorado. I can tell how the Rockies were formed though, wasn’t it all the debris from these canyons getting washed north? - and if anybody believes that, more schooling might help. Today was kind of a special day for me, an anniversary type day so had a lot on my mind and spent most of the time riding to blow the cobwebs away…it helped having a special CD to listen too though, which is great when the radio reception jus isn’t what you’d expect…ok, someone out there knows what I’m talking about. Tomorrow, Vegas baby…should be more fun spending the weekend there instead of the middle of the week and hell, it’s only 2 hours away.
Here are the pics.
